How do I set up a microphone headset that I bought for a MacBook?

Ok I bought this microphone headset for my friend told me it would be better than getting a standing mic. Plus they where to expensive and too big for my MacBook. I plugged it into the computer jacks but I'm trying to figure out how to record and/ or do sound.

1. You sure it's mac compatible? Some are designed to only work with specific, non-compatible hardware. Open Audio MIDI Setup and see if it appears as in input device. What was wrong with the mic built-in to your MacBook?
2. for a mic to work all u need to do is plug it in make sure u plug it in the right sockets in the back...orther than that u should be able to record using an y recorder for instance in windows xp u can do that with sound recorder located in Start>program>accessories>entertainment u can download jetaudio program for more option and easr recording and its free www.jetaudio.com check that the mic is compatable good luck....
